We were unable to physically traverse the Unwritten Earths—as one would sail an ocean to dine in far-off continents or sift through the ruins of ancient cities or turn telescope and antennae to chart distant stars—but we swiftly discovered we could devise rules for the mind, systems of play that release our imaginations to slip freely through the shadowy membranes separating our world from those countless others.
